The Island of Japan Is Home To 7 Of The Most Amazing Animals In The World
Japan is famous for all things cute, but it's not
limited to just cute cartoons and colorful fashion. You can also find these
seven adorable creatures (among many others) on the country's northern island
of Hokkaido. The little guys are seriously the cutest things you'll see all
day. It's almost hard to believe they're real!
Ezo Fukuro
This subspecies of Ural Owl is fluffy, adorable, and
loves to cuddle! They are predators, though, so they might snack on some of the
other adorable critters on this list.
Iizuna
The iizuna is a subspecies of weasel that prefers
the colder climates of Hokkaido, Siberia, and Scandinavia. Its coat turns white
in the winter to help it blend in with its snowy surroundings.
Ezo Naki Usagi
The name translates to "Hokkaido crying
rabbit." ("Ezo" is another name for Hokkaido.) This chubby
creature is related to the Northern Pika, an animal known for its shrill cry.
It's also thought to be the inspiration for Pokemon's famous yellow character,
Pikachu.
Hokkaido red squirrel
Red squirrels can be found all over Europe and Asia,
but this subspecies is only found on Hokkaido.
Hokkaido red fox
There's not much difference between the average red
fox and the Hokkaido subspecies, but these creatures so darn cute. How could
they not be included here?
Shima-Enaga
This little bird with the charmingly pleasant face
is a type of chickadee (also known as a tit). They are notable for their long
tails. Related birds in Japan have brown "eyebrow" markings, but this
one has a perfect, baby-seal-like white orb of a head for maximum cuteness.
Ezo Momonga
Finally, we have this.
This isn't fair. This should be outlawed.
LOOK AT IT!
This obscenely adorable creature is a type of flying
squirrel completely unique to Hokkaido. Everyone thinks it's just the cutest
thing, including the local transit authorities. You can even find its image on
the local railroad's ticket cards.
If these creatures aren't enough of a welcoming
committee to convince you to visit Hokkaido, we really don't know how to help
you. I, for one, am ready to book a lengthy stay for that adorable fox alone.
Have you seen anything cuter in your life? I sure haven't.
